-Rega DAC-R Digital To Analogue Converter – Product Description
The Rega DAC-R is a digital to analogue converter that converts signals of 16/20/24-bit at 32 kHz to 192 kHz. The DAC-R features an improved version of the Rega designed circuit and offers highest possible resolution for all inputs. This DAC is designed to work with any two channel PCM digital audio source and is extremely easy to setup and use.As PC is becoming more and more popular as a media storage device; the DAC-R is made compatible to work with PC and play high resolution lossless formats like WAV, FLAC and ALAC. All the premium high quality components of the DAC-R are housed in an aluminum and steel case, custom made to match the requirements of Rega. The DAC-R features two Wolfson DAC IC’s, three selectable filters, two isolated co-axial inputs, two Toslink SPDIF inputs and one isolated asynchronous USB port. The clever design and engineering of the DAC-R allows this unit to seamlessly blend with any system and deliver the highest quality of sound.
The USB input stage of the DAC-R features a bit perfect XMOS USB Audio 2.0 with asynchronous clocking. The optical and coaxial input stage feature Wolfson digital receiver with a high fidelity and low jitter clock that drive the receiver PLL. The digital-to-analogue conversion stage comprises of two Wolfson WM8742 DACs connected in parallel arrangement. They are driven through a buffer stage to ensure that the data fed to DAC ICs is same as the arrangement used in reference CDP.
To reduce the amount of processing that goes into the signal, the use of sample rate converter is avoided. The output amplifier features a discrete and differential, multiple feedback filter with a high cut-off frequency for use with higher sample rates. To reduce jitter, the digital data is synchronously clocked with the receiver PLL. For DAC decoupling, low impedance conductive polymer capacitors are used and for analogue signal path, MMK bypassed audio grade polyester capacitors are used. The control micro controller is powered by a separate power supply and the main power supply features fast rectifier diodes audio grade capacitors and a toroidal transformer.
